The Dodgers have gotten off to a good start to the 2024 season without one of their best pitchers. Walker Buehler has not pitched since June 10, 2022, after he underwent season-ending surgery on his right elbow and flexor tendon.
After he attempted to come back late last season, the Dodgers shut him down when he did not rebound from a rehab start as quickly as hoped.
Now, the Dodgers have slowly built Buehler up in advance of his 2024 debut. They want him healthy for October, and are willing to sacrifice starts early in March and April.
This past offseason, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he expected Buehler to make three to four rehab starts with Triple-A Oklahoma City before returning to Chavez Ravine.
On Saturday, Buehler made his second rehab start, throwing 65 pitches. He did not give up an earned run and struck out six batters.
After the game, Roberts got good news about Buelher. He still expects the former All-Star to make at least one more rehab start before seeing if he’s in a position to rejoin the Dodgers.
So far, Buehler’s fastball has sat around 94 mph and topped out near 96 mph. His complimentary pitches have looked good and have played well off his fastball.
If and when Buehler rejoins the team, the Dodgers will have to make a roster move to make space in the rotation. Absent an injury to another pitcher, this likely will involve optioning either Michael Grove or Gavin Stone.
