Well, it felt like a regular old Tuesday afternoon. But all of a sudden, it became quite the opposite. On Tuesday, the Dodgers announced via their Twitter that they agreed to a two-year, $6.65 million deal with All-Star RHP Tony Gonsolin, that will avoid arbitration both this season and in 2024.
This deal is very similar to the one the Dodgers signed with RHP Walker Buehler to avoid arbitration in 2021 and 2022, as they’re betting on Gonsolin staying healthy over the next two seasons. That didn’t exactly work out for Buehler, but hopefully the Dodgers have better luck with Gonsolin.
As for the value, the Dodgers have to feel pretty good about what they were able to do with Gonsolin, considering they were a bit off on initial filing numbers. The Dodgers are banking on Gonsolin playing like he did for the first three-quarters of last season, when he was named an All-Star and was a leading candidate for the National League Cy Young Award.
Obviously, Gonsolin didn’t have a positive ending to last season, getting hurt and then getting rocked in just 1.1 innings in the postseason. However, he’s worked this offseason on getting stronger to avoid a major injury like last year, and if he can, the Dodgers should be very happy having him locked in as their third, fourth or fifth starter for the next two seasons.
