Late Friday night, a bombshell rumor was put out by MLB insider Hector Gomez that the Dodgers were interested in landing free agent Shohei Ohtani in free agency and trading for Los Angeles Angels star outfielder Mike Trout. This sent the baseball world into a frenzy about the possibility of the former teammates pairing up again with LA.
But almost as quickly as the report went viral, it was shot down. Angels insider Sam Blum poured cold water on the rumor that the Dodgers were looking at acquiring Halos star outfielder Mike Trout.
He did mention that anything can happen, but this was always going to be a long shot to happen. Even if the Dodgers wanted to land Trout, the Angels may not play ball and it takes two to tango.
Angels owner Arte Moreno has never been a fan of the Dodgers, and the likelihood that he would trade Trout to LA, even for a very strong prospect package, was low. He already isn’t happy that two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani could end up with the Dodgers, so having Trout head to Los Angeles as well may have been too much.
The Angels are in a state of flux at the moment, so moving Trout does make sense. They have multiple needs across their roster, but it seems that they plan to keep the star to rebuild their team around.
We are early into the offseason, but the rumor mill is in full swing. Even with the unlikely nature of it, if the Dodgers were to pull this rumor off, it would light up the baseball world like they haven’t in some time.
