The No. 2 ranked Cal men’s swimming & diving team returned to the friendly confines of Spieker Aquatics Center where they have not lost a dual meet since January 12, 2012. On Friday afternoon, the Bears continued that home winning streak – now at 37 meets, following a convincing 171.5-124.5 win over No. 20 USC.
The Golden Bears opened the afternoon taking the top-four spots in the 200-yard medley relay and didn’t look back, winning 12 of the 14 events. With the win, Cal improves to 5-1 overall and 3-1 against Pac-12 foes.
Cal graduate student Lucas Henveaux had a stellar debut for the Golden Bears. Henveaux won the 1,000 free with a time of 8:57.64, a season-best time by a Cal swimmer. Henveaux captured second in the 500 free with a time of 4:21.84. The 500 free was one of five events the Bears swept.
Destin Lasco was victorious in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:35.2. Lasco also finished second in the 100 butterfly. Dare Rose was the winner of the 100 fly, he finished first with a time of 47.46. Gabriel Jett was the winner of the 500-free (4:19.83) and the 200-fly (1:43.03). Hugo Gonzalez was the winner of the 200-yard backstroke (1:43.36). Björn Seeliger and Reece Whitley won the 100 free and 200 breaststroke respectively.
Chris O’Grady captured the Trojans lone swimming event of the day as he led a 1-2 USC finish in the 100y breaststroke. O’Grady clocked a 53.53 for first while junior Ben Dillard was second in 54.33. O’Grady (1:56.69) and Dillard (1:58.89) later returned to finish 2-3, respectively in the 200y breaststroke.
USC’s powerful diving contingent had a strong showing against the Bears, sweeping both events. Sophomore Shangfei Wang won on both specialties, recording 343.43 points on 1-meter, and 411.60 points on 3-meter. Laurent Gosselin-Paradis claimed second on both boards, finishing 1-meter with 338.03 points and 3-meter with 353.03 points. Senior All-American George Korovin was third with 302.78 points on 1-meter and 325.28 points on 3-meter.
