Grand Rapids, Mich – The Lawrence Technological University men’s basketball team was on the road Wednesday night when they play the Aquinas College Saints. This game was close all the way until the final seconds as the Blue Devils lost a nail biter by a final score of 80-77.
Brandon Beavers led all scorers for the second straight game with 32 points and three rebounds. Gunnar Gustafson pitched in 17 points and nine boards while freshman Andrew Rinn came off the bench to score 15 points, adding three rebounds and two assists.
Gustafson started things off for LTU with a nice turnaround hook shot on the opening possession.
Both teams traded buckets for the next couple of minutes.
Beavers was able to knock down a triple with 16:21 in the first half bringing his team within two.
Gustafson’s layup started off the Blue Devils’ 8-0 run. Carter Frantz was a part of that run after his three-pointer from the wing.
Rinn’s and-1 extended their lead to 21-14 with 12:41 to go.
Jesse Hillis’ back-to-back buckets cut AQ’s lead back within three.
Minutes later Rinn was able to get going after a driving layup and three-ball on the next possession to give LTU a double-digit lead.
The Blue Devils put together another run, scoring 12-straight points to put them up 32-18.
Minutes later, Bronson Sysum’s basket made it 38-26.
With just under two minutes left in the first half, Beavers scored off a layup to put them back up by 14.
The Blue Devils headed into halftime up 40-35.
LTU shot the ball 16-of-30 (53.3%) from the field, 7-of-17 (41.2%) from three, and 1-of-3 (33.3%) from the line.
Coming out of the locker room, Beavers nailed a three-pointer in the opening minutes.
With 15:47 to go, a steal by Beavers led to a breakaway dunk on the other end to make it 55-45.
The Saints went on a 11-3 run in the next four minutes of action to give them the lead back with just under eight minutes remaining.
Gustafson’s layup and a Beavers three made it 68-66.
With 5:36 left in the game, things were knotted at 73 apiece from a Jaylen Rutherford jumper.
Both teams traded buckets in the next couple of minutes.
LTU called a timeout with 2:41 to go, and out of the timeout Beavers knocked down a big-time jumper to tie it up.
After Beavers’ basket, Aquinas came back down and nailed a jump shot giving them the lead.
The Blue Devils could not capitalize on the last final possessions of the game as Aquinas came out on top by a final score of 80-77.
LTU shot the ball 30-of-63 (47.6%) from the field, 11-of-30 (36.7%) from three, and 6-of-9 (66.7%) from the line.
The next Blue Devils matchup is on Saturday, January 15th at home when they host Siena Heights University. This game will tip-off at 3 PM.
